Archer & Armstrong #0 marks the debut of two of the most distinctively conceived characters in the original Valiant universe: Obadiah 'Obie' Archer, a young martial-arts prodigy raised by a corrupt religious sect, and Aram Anni-Padda — Armstrong — an immortal, hard-drinking brawler whose three-thousand-year lifespan made him unlike any superhero on shelves in 1992. By functioning as a self-contained origin story rather than a conventional #1, the issue established Valiant's habit of using zero-numbered preludes to anchor readers before the ongoing continuity accelerated, a structurally bold editorial choice that several other Valiant titles would follow. The mismatched-buddy dynamic it introduced — a strait-laced idealist paired with a gleefully hedonistic immortal — gave the Valiant line a streak of dark comedy it had not yet had, and the characters' long narrative shadow stretched across two full publisher eras and a 2012 universe reboot.

The characters were conceived by the trio of Jim Shooter, Bob Layton, and Barry Windsor-Smith, with Windsor-Smith credited across multiple sources as the primary creative force who originated the duo in their visual and narrative form. Shooter and Layton co-plotted the #0 script, with Shooter taking scripting duties; Windsor-Smith handled both pencils and inks on the opening pages, with Ralph Reese completing the inking on the book's latter half. Bob Layton served as series editor, keeping the project tightly coordinated with Valiant's expanding shared universe even as #0 was designed to stand alone from the Unity crossover that immediately followed in issues #1 and #2.
