In "La Chose des ténèbres," Conan, now Captain of the royal guard and lover to Queen Fatima of Zahmahn, finds his position shattered when the Queen catches him with her servant, Yaila. Sent to the dungeon to be devoured by the Dweller in the Dark, the two escape only to turn the monster’s fate against the Queen herself. With Zahmahn bound by tradition to be ruled by a woman, Conan names Yaila its new sovereign.
