Luis Eduardo Barreto Ferreyra was born on March 1, 1954, in Uruguay, and became one of the more distinctive and versatile artists to work in American comics during the latter decades of the twentieth century. He passed away on December 15, 2011.
Iron Man #129 (1979)
Barreto built a substantial career at DC Comics, where his credits spanned more than two hundred issues across titles including The New Teen Titans, Tales of the Teen Titans, Atari Force, Superman, and Batman. His work on the Teen Titans titles represents the core of his most prominent contributions to the medium, placing him within one of DC's most commercially and creatively vital publishing periods. He later brought that same craftsmanship to Marvel Knights projects as well, demonstrating a range that kept him active across publishers for decades.
Battlestar Galactica #10 (1979)
What made Barreto's story particularly warm was the degree to which comics became a genuine family enterprise. All three of his children pursued careers in art: Diego worked as a comics artist, Andrea served as a colorist, and Guillermo became an inker and illustrator. Each of them collaborated with their father at various points, making his household something of an informal studio across generations.
Marvel Team-Up #88 (1979)
Active in the industry from 1979 through work that extended beyond his death in 2011, Barreto left behind a body of work that rewards readers who appreciate clean, expressive draftsmanship rooted in classical storytelling.
