Michael Dalton Allred, born in 1962, is an American artist and writer whose decades-long career in comics has been defined by a distinctive visual sensibility rooted in pop art and the commercial and comic illustration styles of the 1950s and 1960s. That retro-inflected aesthetic gives his pages an immediately recognizable quality — bright, clean, and deceptively playful.
Madman: The Oddity Odyssey #[nn] (1993)
Allred is best known as the creator of Madman, an independent series following a resurrected amnesiac with a philosophical bent, which became a touchstone of alternative comics and demonstrated that superhero storytelling could carry genuine artistic ambition. He also co-created iZombie, a series that found a second life as a television adaptation. Within mainstream publishing, he brought his signature style to Marvel's Silver Surfer and the Fantastic Four spin-off FF, earning him a devoted readership among fans who responded to the warmth and wit underlying his work. More recently he has continued producing new material, including X-Cellent and Art Ops, reflecting a career spanning from 1991 into the mid-2020s across more than 160 credited issues as artist, writer, colorist, and inker. His frequent collaboration with colorist Laura Allred has been central to the finished look of much of that output, her palette amplifying the period-inspired quality he brings to every page.
