Art Ops #3
Vertigo's wildly inventive series continues with this striking third issue, where a mysterious masked figure in dark robes looms over a shrunken Statue of Liberty against a dizzying red-and-white hypnotic spiral — cover art by Michael Allred that practically pulses off the page. The juxtaposition of an American symbol rendered small and vulnerable against that blank, unsettling face makes for one of the more arresting images in comics that February 2016. Simon, Allred, and Brundage are clearly having a blast pushing this series into strange, provocative territory — and PopMatters wasn't wrong to call it a 10/10.
