John Paul Leon (born April 26, 1972; died May 2, 2021) was an American comic book artist whose richly atmospheric draftsmanship made him one of the most distinctive visual voices of his generation. He broke into the industry in the early 1990s, accumulating credits across more than 150 issues over a career that stretched from 1992 to 2023.
Dark Horse Comics #2 (1992)
Leon first gained wide attention through his work on Static, the Milestone Comics series centered on a young Black superhero navigating adolescence alongside genuine superpowers. That visibility led to Marvel's Earth X, an ambitious alternate-future limited series that became one of his most recognized achievements. His catalog also includes sustained runs on Challengers of the Unknown, Shadow Cabinet, Batman: Creature of the Night, and Black Widow: Deadly Origin, demonstrating a consistent pull toward character-driven, morally complex material.
RoboCop: Prime Suspect #1 (1992)
His style — moody, textured, and grounded in careful figure work — translated naturally beyond the page. Leon contributed concept and style-guide artwork for several major studio productions, among them Batman Begins, Superman Returns, The Dark Knight, and Green Lantern, shaping how those properties were visually developed for film audiences.

Leon worked across roles as artist, inker, colorist, and occasionally writer, revealing an unusually complete command of the medium. He died on May 2, 2021, leaving behind a body of work that continues to influence artists drawn to quieter, more atmospheric corners of superhero storytelling.
