“M.I.A. Part 2”

DMZ #52 continues the "M.I.A. Part Two" arc from Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, and John Paul Leon's cover sets a quietly haunting tone — a massive crashed helicopter dominates the foreground, its wreckage rendered in gritty detail, while a lone solitary figure with a shopping cart stands small against a stark yellow sky, a pair of dog tags bearing the words "M.I.A." hanging in the foreground. That contrast between the enormous, broken machinery of war and one ordinary person navigating the ruins says everything about what makes this Vertigo series so compelling. A strong entry in one of 2010's most unflinching looks at life inside a war zone.
