“Mental Block”

The Creeper looms in his wild yellow-and-red costume, green hair blazing, as he menaces a terrified man pinned against what looks like a rooftop antenna array — with the chilling command "Write for your life, Jack!" making the stakes unmistakably clear. Shawn Martinbrough's cover art captures the character's unhinged energy beautifully, balancing genuine threat with that streak of anarchic dark humor the Creeper does so well. Written by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning with inks by Sal Buscema, this 1998 DC series was clearly firing on all cylinders by issue nine.
