Aug 1997 · DC · 2.25 USD; 3.25 CAD
“Last Days [Part One]”

In "Last Days [Part One]," the modern Challengers—Clay, Brenda, Marlon, and Kenn—race to uncover the mystery behind aircraft vanishing and reappearing in the Mojave Desert, where passengers report seeing a blinding light. When they meet the founders of the new team, Rocky Davis and Ed Sands, the investigation takes a shocking turn as the original Challengers—Ace, Prof, Red, and June—materialize before them, defying death itself. Written by Steven Grant and Len Kaminski, with dynamic art by John Paul Leon and Tommy Lee Edwards, and vivid colors by Matt Hollingsworth, this issue blends suspense and legacy with a cover by Leon and Martinbrough that captures the moment the past returns.

Clay, Brenda, Marlon and Kenn investigate where aircraft disappear and reappear in an instant over the Mojave Desert, noting everyone on board saw a brilliant light. In the desert, Kenn, Marlon, and Brenda meet Rocky Davis and Ed Sands, who founded the new Challengers and who are pulling the plug. Rocky and Marlon fly over the desert and see the Challengers' car disappear into a white light. Their plane crashes. Rocky and Marlon despair, as this is how Rocky's partners died. Yet, before them as big as life, are the original Challengers: Ace, Prof, Red, and June. "What do you mean, we died?"
