Alfred Dean Avison, born July 7, 1920, was an American comic book artist best known for his Golden Age work at Marvel Comics (then Timely Comics), particularly on Captain America and as co-creator of the speedster hero the Whizzer. Hailing from the United States, Avison entered the industry in the early 1940s, contributing to the wartime boom in superhero comics. His clean, dynamic linework and strong storytelling made him a reliable artist on flagship titles like *Captain America Comics*, where he often inked or penciled the star-spangled hero. He also worked on *Joe Palooka*, *Green Hornet Comics*, and romance titles such as *First Romance Magazine* and *First Love Illustrated*. Avison’s most enduring co-creation, the Whizzer, debuted in *USA Comics* #1, a speedster who would later be integrated into Marvel’s larger mythos. After the Golden Age, he continued working in comics through the 1950s and beyond, with credits spanning into the 2020s via reprint collections. Avison passed away in December 1984. Though he never received major industry awards during his lifetime, his foundational contributions to Marvel’s early universe remain recognized by historians and fans alike.
