After 18 months in the service, when he returned to finish high school, George felt like a fish out of water, but Eve believed in him and knew he would succeed. While he survived combat, school and teachers were more than he could take. Asking Eve to wait for him, he left town, returning on prom night to see Eve with Jim Neely. Feeling rejected, George moved to the south side. When Eve finally found him she learned that not only had he been faithful to her, he had a job and worked to keep slum kids off the street. Admitting she was wrong, she ran to his arms and asked him to forgive her.
