“Contents”

"Contents" in Hi-School Romance #41 (1955) delivers a haunting, character-driven tale of teenage longing and manipulation, anchored by Lee Elias’s expressive art and John Belfi’s precise inks. The story follows Alice Clark, a lonely girl whose isolation leads her to be drawn into the world of Campo the magician, whose hypnotic act blurs the line between performance and obsession. Cover by Al Avison captures the eerie allure of the moment Alice steps into the spotlight, a 10-cent comic that lingers long after the final page.

Alice Clark's father was a night station manager and her mother worked during the day so one of them was always asleep which made it difficult to have her friends over, and that her parents did not care about her. Out for a walk the next day, Alice decided to join some neighbors to watch the town parade and became entranced with Campo the magician. When he asked for a volunteer, Alice ran to the stage and Campo used her in his act, hypnotizing her. Planting a post-hypnotic suggestion in Alice's subconscious, she returned to help Campo with his act, dressing in skimpy costumes, wearing make-up and even allowing Campo to kiss her. The kisses become more than just part of the act, as Alice returned night after night. In the mean time, she neglected her studies, and after ridicule from class mates and town folk, decided to run away with Campo. When Campo arrived at her house before the last show, she pleaded with him to take her away and marry her. Astonished, he told her that she meant nothing to him and hired a girl like her in every town he played. Alice's parents threatened to have Campo arrested and told her how important she is to them showing her how wrong she had been... about many things.
