Joe Palooka Comics #74

From the cover of this 1952 Harvey issue, Joe Palooka — head bandaged and armed with a submachine gun — fights his way through a swarm of enemies in a gritty, smoke-filled battlefield scene, with foes reeling in every direction around him. The cover copy says it all: "The Red Lice were swarming in! They thought they had him trapped… but they hadn't reckoned on a Hero's Guts!" Al Avison's pencils and inks deliver real kinetic energy here, capturing a surrounded soldier who simply refuses to go down.
