Joe Palooka #114
☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeHam Fisher's lovable heavyweight Joe Palooka squares off in grand fashion on this 1960 Harvey cover, penciled and inked by Al Avison, as the blond, gloves-up Joe delivers a haymaker that sends a hapless opponent crashing through a chair — with a second fighter, identified as Ruffy Balonki ("World's Greatest Fighter"), looming in the background. The cover headline promises "Joe Palooka Meets the Fighting Balonkis," and the chaotic, comedy-tinged brawl sets a wonderfully energetic tone for the interior story, "The Palooka-Balonki Fight." A cheerful slice of mid-century comics boxing action, right at the bargain price of a dime.

Chauncey, a former fighter, tries to get hired as Joe's bodyguard. At first Joe states he doesn't need one, but Chauncey's wife explains that they're broke because Chauncey hasn't been able to get a fight in 10 years. Joe hires Chauncey, but finds out Chauncey owes money to a loan shark. After a run-in with the loan shark, Joe decides that Chauncey needs a bodyguard more than he does. He pays off Chauncey's loan and returns him to his wife, stating that he is too busy to look after Chauncey but will continue to pay him until Chauncey finds another job.
