“Three's a Crowd in Love”

In "Three's a Crowd in Love," Bob Powell’s expressive art brings to life the tender, bittersweet romance of Penny and Douglas Trimble, set against the quiet charm of a 1955 high school summer. When Penny’s bike fails her at the May Day picnic, Doug’s quiet kindness sparks a connection that deepens through patient care and unspoken feelings. Al Avison’s cover captures the moment’s quiet tension, as Penny’s world shifts from uncertainty to a quiet certainty beneath the moonlight.

Penny was simply gorgeous. Ever since she was old enough to date, guys had thrown themselves at her but she would have none of it. At the annual May Day bike picnic, that all changed when her bicycle tire blew out and she had a bad fall. Douglas Trimble found her, and rigged a splint for her broken leg. As time passed, Doug visited Penny, but never felt himself worthy of such a beauty until Penny told him that she loved him. But when they started dating Doug let Penny have her fun, even when she felt he should be more forceful. One night, her frustration boiled over and she broke up with Doug. Later that week, Wally took Penny out and bad-mouthed Doug, who was standing behind him at the time. A quick punch to the stomach dropped Wally to the floor. "Your escort seems to be slight indisposed," said Doug, who then escorted Penny home. As they kissed beneath the moon, Penny realized that Doug was "the one".
