“My Beloved Doctor”

In "My Beloved Doctor," Harvey’s First Love Illustrated #52 (1955) delivers a bittersweet tale of teenage longing and self-discovery, as the ever-popular Sandy finds herself out of her depth when her usual game of fleeting romance backfires. With art by Bob Powell and a striking cover by Al Avison, the story captures the emotional shift of a girl who thought she knew love—until she didn’t.

Sandy sets out to make each boy fall in love with her, then dumps him and moves on to her next conquest. On the night of the spring prom, she steals Chet from his date Carrie. They go out for a while, but eventually Sandy loses interest. However, when Chet and Carrie are reunited, Sandy realises she actually loves Chet. It’s too late: Chet says “I despise you and all you stand for!” He and Carrie get married and Sandy is left alone—still the “most popular girl around” but without true love.
