After her father dies, 18-year-old Gwen has to run the small-town newspaper he owned, in order to support her mother and lazy younger brother Jimmy. When her boyfriend Jackie proposes moving to Chicago and getting married, Gwen has to turn him down because of her family obligations. She dates new local doctor George and they fall in love. George tells off Gwen’s selfish mother and brother but Gwen can’t bring herself to desert them until she breaks her ankle and her family only complains about the inconvenience to them. Gwen marries George and her mother & brother eventually get over it.
