Paul Douglas Cornell was born on 18 July 1967 in Britain and has built one of the more genuinely varied careers in contemporary genre fiction, moving fluidly between television, prose novels, and comics. He first made his mark in the Doctor Who universe, where he created Bernice Summerfield, one of the most enduring companion figures to emerge outside the television series itself. His six original novels added to a prose output that spans multiple genres.

Cornell's transition into comics proved equally productive. Working across British publishers and both major American houses, he accumulated credits on more than 170 issues between 1990 and 2025. His tenure on Captain Britain and MI13 for Marvel drew particular attention for its confident handling of British superhero mythology, while Wolverine and Action Comics demonstrated his range within mainstream superhero fare. He also worked on longer-form creator-driven projects such as Saucer Country and Demon Knights, and contributed regularly to Doctor Who Magazine.

On television, Cornell wrote for Robin Hood, Primeval, Casualty, Holby City, and Coronation Street in Britain, and contributed an episode to the American series Elementary. That breadth of output earned him a rare distinction: he is one of only two writers ever nominated for Hugo Awards across the prose, comics, and television categories — a reflection of how seriously his work has been taken across very different storytelling forms.
