About this Issue

Dark Reign: Young Avengers #1 is the first appearance of the entire Young Masters team — Melter, Executioner, Enchantress (Sylvie Lushton), Big Zero, Egghead, and Coat of Arms — six wholly new characters introduced simultaneously in a single issue, a rare feat for a limited series of the era. The issue extends the structural logic of Marvel's Dark Reign crossover event down to the teenage tier, mirroring the Dark Avengers–vs.–Avengers dynamic with a morally unmoored group of powered teens who claim the Young Avengers name before they have earned it. Sylvie Lushton's debut here carries particular long-term cultural weight: her concept — an ordinary Oklahoma girl secretly empowered and perhaps even created by Loki — directly inspired the character of Sylvie in Marvel's Disney+ series Loki (2021–2023), as confirmed in the show's official artbook. The issue also plants the seed of one of Marvel's more philosophically ambitious teen-hero storylines, asking whether identity, heroism, and moral agency can be chosen when one's very existence may be someone else's scheme.

History

The series was announced at New York Comic Con in February 2009, with writer Paul Cornell discussing the project in interviews at Comic Book Resources and Newsarama, and artist Mark Brooks featured separately discussing his design work on the Young Masters. Cornell — best known at the time for his well-regarded Captain Britain and MI-13 — was paired with Brooks, who served as penciler, inker, and cover artist across the full five-issue run, with Christina Strain as colorist and Tom Brevoort as editor. The series was conceived as a deliberate Dark Reign satellite title, applying the event's central 'dark mirror' architecture — already used by the Dark Avengers — to the Young Avengers corner of the Marvel Universe.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First appearance of the Young Masters team, also referred to in this issue as the 'new Young Avengers': Melter (Christopher Colchiss), Executioner (Danny DuBois), Enchantress (Sylvie Lushton), Big Zero (Amity Hunter), Egghead, and Coat of Arms (Lisa Molinari) — all six debuting simultaneously.
  • Written by Paul Cornell with art, inks, and cover by Mark Brooks; colored by Christina Strain; lettered by Cory Petit; edited by Tom Brevoort; Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada.
  • Released May 13, 2009 (cover-dated July 2009); first issue of a five-part limited series titled 'Young Masters.'
  • Sylvie Lushton's Enchantress — a human girl from Broxton, Oklahoma secretly empowered (and possibly created outright) by Loki — is the character who later inspired the MCU's Sylvie, portrayed by Sophia Di Martino in the Disney+ series Loki (2021–2023), as confirmed in the show's official artbook.
  • The established Young Avengers — Wiccan, Hulkling, Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Speed, Vision (Jonas), Patriot, Stature — appear only in cameo in this first issue, with the Young Masters serving as sole protagonists.
  • The Young Masters are framed as a dark-mirror counterpart to the Young Avengers, paralleling the same structural relationship the Dark Avengers have to the original Avengers during the broader Dark Reign event.
  • The issue and full series were collected in the Dark Reign: Young Avengers trade paperback (ISBN 0785139095), collecting all five issues; the individual issue also received two reprints per the Marvel Database.
  • Several Young Masters members — including Coat of Arms, Egghead, Executioner, and Melter — went on to appear in Avengers Academy and Avengers Undercover as members of the Masters of Evil, extending the characters' narrative reach well beyond the original miniseries.
