About this Issue

Wolverine Vol. 5 #3 (2013) is the third chapter of the 'Hunting Season' arc — the opening story of the Marvel NOW! fifth volume that Paul Cornell and Alan Davis built as a deliberate bridge to the eventual 'Death of Wolverine' event. The issue advances a cosmically-scaled threat by picking up the Watcher's ominous appearance from the previous issue and using it as the story's dramatic engine, pushing a street-level Logan into a threat of universe-sized consequence. It also introduces two minor but catalogue-worthy first appearances — the fiction writer Marcus H. Harold and the engineer Robert Templeton — while continuing to establish the Guernica Bar as a recurring setting that Cornell used to flesh out the superhero support ecosystem around Logan. As part of Volume 5 as a whole, the 'Hunting Season' arc represents a meaningful creative pivot: Cornell consciously explored a more self-restrained, humanity-seeking Wolverine fresh off the Avengers vs. X-Men fallout, a characterization experiment that set the table for stripping Logan of his healing factor in the subsequent 'Killable' arc.

History

The fifth Wolverine ongoing launched in March 2013 as part of Marvel's Marvel NOW! initiative, which cancelled the Jason Aaron-written Volume 4 at issue #317 and handed the title to writer Paul Cornell and penciler Alan Davis. Cornell, known for his work on Captain Britain and MI:13 and Doctor Who, brought a British sensibility to Logan's world, while Davis — a veteran of Excalibur and Uncanny X-Men — supplied clean, expressive linework. The series was edited by Jeanine Schaefer, with Nick Lowe as group editor and Axel Alonso as Editor-in-Chief. Issue #3 shipped on May 8, 2013, carrying a July 2013 cover date, with inks by Mark Farmer, colors by Matt Hollingsworth, and lettering by Cory Petit.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Story title: 'Hunting Season: Part 3 of 4' — the third chapter of the opening arc of Wolverine Vol. 5 (2013), part of the Marvel NOW! publishing initiative.
  • Written by Paul Cornell; pencils by Alan Davis; inks by Mark Farmer; colors by Matt Hollingsworth; letters by Cory Petit; edited by Jeanine Schaefer.
  • Featured characters: Wolverine (Logan) and Nick Fury Jr. — the issue continues the team-up between the two that began in earlier issues of the arc.
  • First appearance of Robert Templeton, a minor supporting character introduced at the Guernica Bar, a superhero-trade watering hole on West Fourth Street in New York.
  • First appearance of Marcus H. Harold, a fiction writer who frequents the Guernica Bar; sources note he bears a similar name to Harold H. Harold of Tomb of Dracula but is explicitly not the same character.
  • The Watcher (Uatu) factors into the issue's dramatic stakes — Wolverine attempts to convey to Nick Fury Jr. the seriousness of the Watcher's prior appearance, signaling the threat is of cosmic significance.
  • Logan and Nick Fury Jr. track a smart-bullet/alien weapon to Blenkin Pharmaceuticals, where Wolverine confronts guards in Mandroid armor; the issue ties into a larger Microverse-originated alien-invasion plot.
  • This issue was collected in the Wolverine: Hunting Season trade paperback (Marvel, September 2013), which reprints Wolverine (2013) #1–6; the full Volume 5 run of 13 issues also serves as a prelude to the 'Death of Wolverine' storyline.
