“Mortal”

In "Mortal," Wolverine faces his most vulnerable moment yet when the Beast confirms his healing factor has been erased by a Negative Zone virus—leaving him truly mortal for the first time in his life. Now haunted by the fear of death, even a simple shave becomes a moment of dread as he grapples with his new fragility. When Nick Fury reveals that the virus is still spreading and only one survivor remains—the imprisoned Host—Wolverine must confront his own mortality while stepping into a mission that could decide the fate of the world. Written by Paul Cornell and illustrated by Mirco Pierfederici, with inks by Karl Kesel and colors by Andres Mossa, the issue's cover by Alan Davis and Mark Farmer captures the weight of this turning point.

The Beast confirms that Wolverine's healing factor has been totally wiped out by a Negative Zone virus and he is now completely mortal. This sends Wolverine into a mopey funk as he considers the possibility of his own death. Even a simple thing like cutting himself while shaving makes him nervous. While trying to deal with all of these new emotional issues, Fury tells him that the virus is still threatening to take over the world and has killed every meta-human who has control over viruses except for one. Her name is the Host and she is currently the prisoner of the Black Panther in Wakanda.
