He came up through British comics, joining 2000 AD from its very first issue in 1977 and contributing extensively to that anthology throughout its early years — a formative stretch that established his reputation for disciplined, expressive draftsmanship.

His catalog is remarkably broad, taking in long runs on titles such as Doctor Who Weekly, Doctor Who: A Marvel Monthly, and Green Lantern, reflecting a versatility that carried him fluidly between British and American publishers. It was his partnership with writer Alan Moore, however, that proved most consequential.
