“The Justice Society Joins the War on Japan! Introduction”
About this Collection

This volume collects All Star Comics #7-10, featuring the Justice Society of America's early adventures, including the introduction of the original Starman and the first appearance of the villainous Injustice Society. The Archive Edition series presents these Golden Age stories in hardcover with restored artwork and coloring, preserving the classic tales of DC's first superhero team from the 1940s.

In "The Justice Society Joins the War on Japan! Introduction," Starman arrives in Nazi-occupied Poland, where he encounters the defiant Bowman of Mons—a secretive order of resistance fighters who initially mistake him for an enemy. With a mix of wit and courage, Starman earns their trust, helping them liberate prisoners and seize weapons, all while outsmarting the enemy with a baffling "code" made of baseball batting averages. Written by Gardner Fox and illustrated by Lou Ferstadt, this archival tale captures a bold, inventive chapter in the Justice Society’s wartime legacy, with a cover by Dave Gibbons that perfectly frames the story’s blend of action and absurdity.

Starman is headed for Poland, conquered already by the Nazis, but a nation not willing to entirely give up. He spots an ancient order of Poles called the Bowman of Mons, who at once think he is an enemy, but a good meal changes their minds. Starman volunteers to help the group free their imprisoned peoples, capture guns and weapons, and aid in the world-wide fight for freedom. Starman disguises himself as an informer and gives the Nazis a "secret code" to decipher consisting of pro baseball players batting averages. After mopping up the Nazis, Starman promises more food dropped by parachute.
