“Doppelgänger, Part 2”

Prog 53 of 2000 AD (25 February 1978) spotlights Dan Dare in "Doppelgänger, Part 2," and Dave Gibbons' cover makes the stakes unmistakably clear — a large, unsettling close-up of Dan Dare's face dominates the right side, marked with eerie yellow patches, while inset panels show a confrontation between Dare and what appears to be an exact duplicate of himself, with the alarming caption proclaiming that the duplicate already has his face, his voice, his memories — and now his ship. It's a clever, visually layered composition that draws you straight into the paranoia of a man facing his own reflection as an enemy. A fine slice of late-seventies British sci-fi comics at its inventive best.
