“The Key That Unlocked Chaos!”
About this Collection

This 2014 collection from DC brings together key confrontations between Superman and the alien warlord Mongul, including stories from the 1980s that established Mongul as a major threat to the Man of Steel. The volume features classic tales where Mongul, often wielding power over the Warworld satellite, tests Superman's strength and resolve in epic battles written and illustrated by top creators of the era.

In "The Key That Unlocked Chaos!", Superman’s birthday celebration at the Fortress of Solitude takes a dark turn when he falls under the influence of the Black Mercy, a mysterious flower gifted by Mongul. With Wonder Woman battling Mongul, Batman and Robin race to free Superman from the flower’s hypnotic grip—only for the strange power to shift in unexpected ways. Written by Alan Moore and brought to life with bold, detailed art by Dave Gibbons, this 2014 issue features a striking cover by Ryan Sook.

Wonder Woman, Batman, and Robin arrive at the Fortress of Solitude to celebrate Superman's birthday, but find him under the thrall of a flower called the Black Mercy, a gift from Mongul. Under its control, Superman experiences his greatest desire, life on an unexploded Krypton. While Wonder Woman fights with Mongul, Batman and Robin remove the flower from Superman, and after it briefly attaches to Batman, Robin puts it on Mongul, trapping him in dreams of his own greatest desire.
