2000 AD reaches its tenth birthday with Prog 520, and the cover — pencilled by Dave Gibbons and John Higgins, with inks by John Higgins — celebrates in fittingly outrageous style: a giant birthday cake emblazoned with "TEN '87 YEARS" and lit candles, its side decorated with portrait panels of four of the comic's signature characters, including Judge Dredd in his distinctive red helmet, alongside a green-skinned alien figure floating above. It's a jubilant snapshot of a comic that had, by 1987, built one of the most distinctive rosters in British comics — and inside, T. B. Grover and B. Kitson kick off "Hour of the Wolf" to mark the occasion.
