Green Lantern Corps: Recharge #1 marks the narrative and creative bridge between the landmark Hal Jordan restoration story Green Lantern: Rebirth and the long-running Green Lantern Corps ongoing series — effectively rebuilding the entire institutional backbone of DC's space-cop mythology after years of the Corps' dissolution. The issue is the debut of Soranik Natu, a Korugarian neurosurgeon whose complicated relationship with the Green Lantern legacy (her home planet was enslaved by a GL turned tyrant) gave the reconstituted Corps its most compelling moral tension and eventually one of its most consequential characters. Alongside Natu, this extra-sized first issue introduces Vath Sarn and Isamot Kol — soldiers on opposite sides of the Rann-Thanagar War who are simultaneously conscripted into the Corps, a storytelling device that forced the new Corps to embody the very idealism it was supposed to represent. Patrick Gleason's work here launched his signature tenure on the GL franchise, setting visual and tonal templates that would carry through the Sinestro Corps War and Blackest Night.

History

The series was co-written by Geoff Johns — already deep into the Hal Jordan restoration project — and Dave Gibbons, the English artist and writer best known for Watchmen, who brought both craft and institutional knowledge of the Corps' ensemble potential to the collaboration. DC designed Recharge as a deliberate companion to the simultaneously launching Green Lantern vol. 4 monthly: where that book centred Hal Jordan as a solo hero, Recharge and its successor ongoing focused on the Corps as a police-force ensemble, with veteran Lanterns Guy Gardner, Kyle Rayner, and Kilowog shepherding an entirely new generation of recruits. The 40-page debut issue was published on September 21, 2005, with a cover-dated November 2005, and was subsequently collected in a trade paperback and reprinted as part of the Green Lantern by Geoff Johns Omnibus and the Green Lantern Corps by Peter J. Tomasi & Patrick Gleason Omnibus.
