Who is Wolverine?

James Howlett is a mutant born in late 19th-century Canada who discovered his power to spontaneously grow bone claws from his knuckles during a traumatic childhood incident. Decades of hard living, covert government experiments, and a procedure that coated his skeleton and claws with indestructible adamantium forged him into the near-unkillable feral fighter who would eventually take the name Wolverine.

Few characters in Marvel's history have proven as relentlessly compelling as Wolverine, who burst onto the scene in The Incredible Hulk #180 in 1974 β€” a Bronze Age debut courtesy of Len Wein and Herb Trimpe that set the stage for one of comics' most extraordinary careers. Over more than five decades of publication, he's become a cornerstone of The Uncanny X-Men and a star of his own long-running solo series, racking up an astonishing 3,533 catalog appearances and 131 key issues that collectors have been hunting ever since. As a proud member of the X-Men, he shares the page with titans like Storm, Cyclops, and Spider-Man, running in some of Marvel's most celebrated company. Whether you're a seasoned collector or just discovering the Bronze Age, Wolverine's sheer longevity and cultural weight make him essential reading.

Trivia

  • Wolverine was originally introduced as a villain for another Marvel hero rather than as an X-Men member, and his early appearances were so limited that he only gets a brief glimpse in his very first comic outing.en.wikipedia.org
  • His famous claws were initially drawn as part of his gloves, with the reveal that they are actually part of his body coming later during the X-Men era.en.wikipedia.org
  • One of Wolverine's most distinctive visual traits almost never existed in its final form: his first mask was drawn with small whisker-like details specifically designed to echo an animal face.en.wikipedia.org
  • Chris Claremont has written more of Wolverine's comics than any other writer in our catalog β€” 348 issues.
