James Howlett is a mutant born in late 19th-century Canada who discovered his power to spontaneously grow bone claws from his knuckles during a traumatic childhood incident. Decades of hard living, covert government experiments, and a procedure that coated his skeleton and claws with indestructible adamantium forged him into the near-unkillable feral fighter who would eventually take the name Wolverine.
