Astonishing X-Men #3
This third volume of Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's acclaimed run on Astonishing X-Men collects issues #13-18. The story arc 'Torn' delves into the fractured psyche of Emma Frost as a mysterious enemy manipulates the team from within, forcing Cyclops, Wolverine, Beast, and the others to confront their deepest fears and secrets. Featuring the debut of the sentient Danger Room known as Danger, this volume is a psychological thriller that reshapes the X-Men's understanding of their own history and alliances.
In "Torn [Part One]," Joss Whedon and John Cassaday deliver a pulse-pounding chapter of Astonishing X-Men as Cyclops confronts a twisted illusion of Emma Frost, unraveling the Hellfire Club's mental siege. With Beast's mind restored by Blindfold's mysterious string and chaos erupting as Ord and Danger assault the mansion, the X-Men are pulled into a desperate battle that ends with S.W.O.R.D. whisking them away—leaving behind a chilling prophecy that one will not return. The cover by John Cassaday captures the tension in stark, dramatic detail.

Cyclops, having shot "Emma" in the head, continues to shoot the Hellfire Club members, exposing them as mental projections, except for Cassandra Nova who is more persistent. Blindfold restores Beast's personality with a special ball of string he created. Ord and Danger invade the mansion, fighting Hisako and dragging her into the main fight. Cyclops talks Shadowcat down from killing Emma, Ord and Danger break through, and then S.W.O.R.D. teleports the X-Men, Hisako, Ord and Danger onto their ship and flies away with them all. Blindfold prophesies that one of the X-Men will not return.
