About this Issue

Astonishing X-Men #13 opens the 'Torn' arc — Joss Whedon and John Cassaday's third and most psychologically intricate story arc — which uses Cassandra Nova's manipulation of Emma Frost as a lens to deconstruct each core X-Man through their deepest fears and traumas, making it one of the sharpest character-study arcs in the franchise's history. The issue introduces 'Perfection,' a psionic projection embodying Emma Frost's younger, evil self, and assembles a new Hellfire Club Inner Circle that functions entirely as a psychic weapon rather than a conventional villain organization. It is part of the run that won the 2006 Will Eisner Award for Best Continuing Series, cementing the Whedon/Cassaday collaboration as a defining high-water mark of early-2000s superhero comics. The arc's motion-comic adaptation later brought Cassaday's artwork to new audiences on DVD and streaming platforms, extending the issue's cultural reach well beyond the printed page.

In "Torn," Emma Frost's true allegiance comes to light as her past with the Hellfire Club resurfaces, shaking the foundations of the X-Men. Meanwhile, Shadowcat and Colossus rekindle their bond in a quiet moment that carries quiet weight. Written by Joss Whedon and brought to life with striking detail by John Cassaday—both in story and on the cover—this issue marks a turning point in the team's dynamics, all rendered in Laura Martin’s vivid colors and Chris Eliopoulos’s precise lettering.

History

After a hiatus of several months following the 'Dangerous' arc, the title resumed in February 2006 with issue #13 as the launch of 'Torn.' Marvel deliberately shifted the book to a bimonthly schedule beginning with this issue, giving writer Joss Whedon and penciler John Cassaday additional production time to prevent the chronic lateness that had dogged earlier issues. Editor Mike Marts shepherded the arc, with Laura Martin on colors and Chris Eliopoulos on letters — the same core production team that had been in place since the series launched in 2004 under editor-in-chief Joe Quesada. The series had been conceived as a showcase title for Whedon after Marvel editor Quesada pitched him the project at a convention, pairing him with Cassaday specifically because Whedon admired his photorealistic, cinematic style on Planetary.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • Written by Joss Whedon, penciled and inked by John Cassaday, colored by Laura Martin, lettered by Chris Eliopoulos, edited by Mike Marts; cover date April 2006, release date February 22, 2006.
  • First issue of the six-part 'Torn' arc (issues #13–18), the third story arc in the Whedon/Cassaday run, following 'Gifted' (#1–6) and 'Dangerous' (#7–12).
  • Introduces 'Perfection,' a hooded psionic projection conjured by Emma Frost at Cassandra Nova's behest, representing Frost's younger, evil self — one of three such projections forming a new Hellfire Club Inner Circle alongside Sebastian Shaw and the deceased student Negasonic Teenage Warhead.
  • The Hellfire Club apparitions in this arc are later revealed to be entirely psionic constructs: Cassandra Nova had embedded a psychic sleeper-agent suggestion in Emma Frost's mind during their encounter in Grant Morrison's New X-Men run, activating it here to use Frost as a Trojan horse against the team.
  • Issue depicts Emma Frost assuming the form of Jean Grey to psychologically manipulate Cyclops — a scene that functions as a direct confrontation with the Scott Summers/Jean Grey dynamic Whedon had been building since issue #1.
  • Features a scene on the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier where Agent Abigail Brand of S.W.O.R.D. clashes with Commander Maria Hill, establishing the institutional tension between the two agencies in the absence of Nick Fury — early, significant characterization for Brand.
  • Beginning with this issue, the series moved from a monthly to a bimonthly publication schedule to accommodate the creative team's production pace and avoid further late-shipping issues.
  • The entire 'Torn' arc (issues #13–18) was adapted as a six-episode motion comic mini-series by Marvel Knights Animation, co-directed by John Cassaday and Neal Adams, and released on DVD by Shout! Factory on August 14, 2012; the arc was also collected in Astonishing X-Men Vol. 3: Torn (ISBN 978-0785117599) and is reprinted in the Whedon/Cassaday Omnibus.
