Norman Keith Breyfogle was born on February 27, 1960, and passed away on September 24, 2018. An American comic book artist, he built his reputation primarily through a sustained run on DC Comics' Batman titles between 1987 and 1995, a period that produced some of the most kinetically expressive Batman artwork of that era.
Detective Comics #583 (1988)
Breyfogle's collaborations with writers Alan Grant and John Wagner proved especially fertile. Together they introduced the Ventriloquist and Ratcatcher to the Batman rogues' gallery, while his partnership with Grant alone yielded several more enduring figures: the morally complex Anarky, the brooding Jeremiah Arkham, the calculating Victor Zsasz, and Amygdala. His work spanned Detective Comics, a standalone Anarky series, and The Spectre, among many other titles across a career touching 288 credited issues from 1978 to 2021.

Beyond Gotham, Breyfogle co-created Prime — the flagship hero of Malibu Comics' Ultraverse imprint — alongside writers Gerard Jones and Len Strazewski. He also demonstrated range as both writer and artist on Metaphysique, an original series he developed for Malibu. Credits on titles as varied as Life with Archie further underscore how comfortably he moved across genres. His character designs proved durable enough to outlast his active years, and his Batman work in particular remains a touchstone for artists drawn to expressionistic figure work.
