The 2010 series grew directly from a six-issue run written by Michael Uslan in Archie #600–605 (2009), which depicted Archie's fork-in-the-road choice between Betty and Veronica; following that storyline's commercial success, Archie Comics — under new CEO Jon Goldwater — greenlit an ongoing series to explore both futures simultaneously. Uslan conceived the overarching concept and wrote the debut issue, with pencils by Norm Breyfogle (best known for his late-1980s Batman work at DC) inked by Joe Rubinstein and Andrew Pepoy; series writer Paul Kupperberg then took over the ongoing scripting duties from issue #2 onward. The book was published in a newsstand magazine format rather than standard comic dimensions, blending the two serialized story chapters with teen-magazine features — including a fantasy casting poll for an imaginary Archie movie and an interview with incoming Archie Co.
