About this Collection

This 1991 hardcover collects the Elseworlds tale 'Batman: Holy Terror,' written by Alan Brennert with art by Norm Breyfogle. In this alternate reality story, Gotham is ruled by a theocratic regime, and Bruce Wayne becomes a freedom fighter against the oppressive church-state. The volume stands as a standalone, non-canonical exploration of the Batman mythos within DC's Elseworlds imprint.

In the alternate 1991 world of Batman: Holy Terror, Gotham Towne remains under the iron grip of a church-dominated England, where Bruce Wayne witnesses his parents’ murder as a child. Written by Alan Brennert and illustrated with stark, haunting detail by Norm Breyfogle—whose dynamic pencils and inks define the cover and interior—this story follows Bruce as he uncovers a conspiracy stretching from the Green Man Project to the secretive Star Chamber. With James Gordon’s warning that Joe Chill acted on orders, Bruce dons the cowl not just for vengeance, but to continue his parents’ fight against a system that sacrifices truth for dogma.

In a world where America is still part of a church-dominated England, Bruce Wayne survives the death of his parents in Gotham Towne. When Bruce comes of age, James Gordon tells Bruce that he suspects Joe Chill killed his parents under orders from the government. Bruce takes on the guise of the Batman to take his revenge for their murders. But he discovers that the conspiracy leads past Dr. Erdel's Green Man Project to a Star Chamber. Determining that the system was responsible for his parents’ deaths, Batman vows to carry on their quest to free people from oppressive religious rule.
