Montoya was created for Batman: The Animated Series by Bruce Timm, Paul Dini, and Mitch Brian; DC preemptively introduced her into comics continuity before her animated debut in 'P.O.V.' (November 4, 1992).
The main story is titled 'The Return of Scarface, Part I: Mustache Pete Is Dead!' — a three-part arc continued in Detective Comics #642; it features the Ventriloquist and Scarface as the primary villains alongside the Street Demonz gang.
As a self-referential in-joke, creator credits for Alan Grant and Norm Breyfogle appear on wanted posters visible on the cover of the issue.
Went on sale January 23, 1992, with a March 1992 cover date; published in both a direct edition and a newsstand variant.
The story was reprinted in Batman: The Caped Crusader Vol. 6 (DC, 2021/April 2022).
Renee Montoya later became the second Question (after Vic Sage's death in 52, 2006–2007), making this issue the origin point of that entire lineage.
