“The Sins of the Father”

The final chapter of this 1999 DC series goes out with a genuinely provocative bang — the cover by Norm Breyfogle and Joe Rubinstein poses a darkly absurd mystery, with the Joker, a scarred man in a trench coat, a green hulking figure, and a wild-haired scientist gathered around a baby carriage bearing the anarchy symbol, while the tagline taunts: "One of these guys is your father." The text "Your name is Anarky" and "Have a nice life!" give the whole composition an unsettling, sardonic wit perfectly suited to Alan Grant's title character. It's a fittingly bold send-off for a series that never shied away from big, strange ideas.
