About this Collection

This 2024 edition collects the first volume of DC's Elseworlds: Batman series, reprinting a selection of standalone tales that reimagine the Dark Knight in alternate realities, timelines, and genres. From Victorian-era mysteries to futuristic dystopias, these stories explore Batman outside the constraints of mainstream continuity, showcasing the creative breadth of the character's mythos.

In the alternate world of Elseworlds: Batman #1—"The Devil's Workshop"—Bruce Wayne grows up in a Gotham Towne where England’s church-dominated empire still rules America. After learning his parents’ murder was orchestrated by the state, Bruce dons the cowl not just for vengeance, but to dismantle a vast conspiracy reaching into the secretive Star Chamber. Written by Alan Brennert and illustrated with haunting detail by Norm Breyfogle, with colors by Lovern Kindzierski and letters by Bill Oakley, this striking tale unfolds under a cover by Jerry Bingham.

In a world where America is still part of a church-dominated England, Bruce Wayne survives the death of his parents in Gotham Towne. When Bruce comes of age, James Gordon tells Bruce that he suspects Joe Chill killed his parents under orders from the government. Bruce takes on the guise of the Batman to take his revenge for their murders. But he discovers that the conspiracy leads past Dr. Erdel's Green Man Project to a Star Chamber. Determining that the system was responsible for his parents’ deaths, Batman vows to carry on their quest to free people from oppressive religious rule.
