Dwayne Glenn McDuffie was born on February 20, 1962, and died just one day after his 49th birthday, on February 21, 2011. A writer who worked across both comic books and television, he is perhaps best remembered as a co-founder of Milestone Media, a minority-owned publishing company that set out to address the chronic underrepresentation of people of color in American comics. Through Milestone, McDuffie helped create or co-create a remarkable roster of characters — among them Static, Icon, Rocket, and Hardware — giving readers heroes whose backgrounds reflected communities that mainstream publishers had long overlooked.
His comics career, which stretched from 1989 through titles including Damage Control, Deathlok, Fantastic Four, and a substantial run on Justice League of America, demonstrated a writer comfortable with both sharp humor and grander superhero drama. On the animation side, he brought those same sensibilities to Static Shock, Justice League Unlimited, and the Ben 10 follow-up series Alien Force and Ultimate Alien, earning him a broad audience beyond the direct market.
McDuffie received three Eisner Award nominations across his career — recognition from peers in an industry whose possibilities he had worked, with genuine conviction, to expand. His legacy endures most visibly in Static, a character who has continued to resonate with readers and viewers decades after his creation.
