It continues the stories of Curtis Metcalf as Hardware and Virgil Hawkins as Static, while also featuring crossovers with Superman and Wonder Woman that brought these heroes into the broader DC Universe. The collection showcases the socially conscious storytelling and diverse character roster that defined the Milestone imprint.
"Static Needs a New Pair of Shoes" delivers a sharp, surreal twist on dimensional travel in a Milestone Compendium standout, spotlighting postal worker Fred Bentson’s mysterious sleepwalking between realities—specifically, the world of Superman’s Metropolis. Written by Dwayne McDuffie and illustrated by Denys Cowan, J. J. Birch, and a stellar team of inkers, colorists, and letterers, the story follows Hardware as he reluctantly joins Fred on a trip that turns dangerous when they confront scavengers in a gritty, unfamiliar Metropolis. The moment takes a chilling turn when Hardware sees Steel’s reflection in a shattered mirror—only to wake back home, leaving Alva eager to exploit the next crossover. Cover by Denys Cowan and John Floyd captures the story’s eerie, otherworldly tone.
In "No Rest for the Weary," postal worker Fred Bentson wakes up in Metropolis every time he falls asleep—until Hardware and Curt get pulled into the mystery. As Fred navigates the strange cross-dimensional rift, Hardware faces off against would-be scavengers in a tense, high-stakes encounter. When a mirror reveals a chilling reflection from another world, the line between realities blurs—leaving Fred awake and Hardware back home, with Alva already planning their next move.
In "Changing Realities!", Superboy, settling into life in Metropolis after leaving the Cadmus Project, crosses paths with interdimensional traveler Fred Bentson just as the Parasite strikes. With Dubbilex’s guidance, Superboy overcomes the threat, only to be abruptly pulled into a new reality—Dakota City—where he must face a new opponent: Rocket.
In "Living in a Dreamworld," Bentson's unstable dimension-hopping pulls Superboy into Dakota, where he reluctantly teams up with the skeptical Rocket. As Dr. Alva scrambles to understand the source of Bentson’s erratic shifts, the trio finds themselves caught in a mystery that stretches beyond the boundaries of reality—before they can even begin to unravel it, Bentson vanishes again.
In "Collision Course," Steel races to confront the Colonel and his AmerTek forces after they leave Jemahl hospitalized, while the Black Ops exploit Fred Bentson’s dimension-spanning powers. Back in Dakota City, Dr. Alva moves with quiet urgency, and as tensions escalate, Hardware and Steel clash—only to be pulled apart by Rocket. Just as Dakota City materializes across the river from Metropolis, Superman arrives, sensing the storm brewing on both sides of the divide.
In "You Shouldn't a Bit, Fish," Rift’s ascension to godhood throws the balance of two worlds into chaos, prompting Hazard and Alva to enlist the unwitting Hardware and Steel in a dangerous scheme to harness his power. As Hardware’s lethal intentions clash with Steel’s belief in mercy, the two must confront not only their conflicting methods but the true cost of their choices—before one of them crosses a line they can’t return from.
