“No Rest for the Weary”

In "No Rest for the Weary," written by Dwayne McDuffie and illustrated by Denys Cowan, J. J. Birch, and Prentis Rollins, postal worker Fred Bentson stumbles into a strange phenomenon: every time he sleeps, he wakes up in Metropolis, Superman’s city. When Alva enlists Hardware to investigate, Curt and Fred take a dangerous trip across dimensions—only to find themselves facing ruthless scavengers in a city that feels too familiar. After a tense showdown, a chilling moment at a shattered mirror reveals a shocking reflection, leaving both Fred and Hardware questioning what they’ve truly seen. Cover by Denys Cowan and Jimmy Palmiotti.

A postal worker named Fred Bentson has a problem: when he falls asleep, he wakes up in another universe. The universe of Superman's Metropolis, in fact. Alva asks Hardware to investigate and Curt ends up tagging along with Fred on one of his inter-dimensional trips. While in Metropolis, Hardware has to deal with some aspiring scavengers/rapists. After cleaning house, Hardware looks in a mirror and sees Steel looking at him from the other side. The mirror shatters, Fred awakes, and Hardware is back home. Alva is overjoyed; another universe to exploit.
