Thomas Stanford Lyle was born on November 2, 1953, and spent the better part of four decades contributing to mainstream superhero comics before his death on November 19, 2019. A versatile American artist comfortable handling pencils, inks, and occasionally writing, Lyle built a catalog of 182 credited issues across publishers, active from 1984 through the early 2020s.
Starman #1 (1988)
He is perhaps best remembered for his extended work on Starman and Robin at DC Comics, the latter including the miniseries Robin III: Cry of the Huntress, and for his runs on Spider-Man at Marvel. His DC work in particular helped define the visual identity of Tim Drake's early years as Robin, giving the character a kinetic, street-level energy that suited the grittier tone DC was cultivating at the time. Beyond those flagship titles, Lyle contributed to Detective Comics and Punisher, demonstrating a range that moved comfortably between detective noir and action-heavy storytelling.
Starman #2 (1988)
His style leaned toward dynamic figure work and clear sequential storytelling, qualities that made him a reliable and sought-after collaborator throughout the 1980s and 1990s. While no major industry awards are documented in available records, Lyle's body of work left a meaningful impression on readers who grew up with his distinctive takes on some of comics' most recognizable characters.
