“A Matter of Life and Death!”

Tom Lyle's cover for Starman #11 (June 1989) says it all in one raw, kinetic image: Starman in his distinctive yellow, black, and purple costume erupts through a shower of debris and shrapnel, fists clenched and mouth open in a fierce battle cry, with a blazing orange explosion radiating behind him. The tagline "Busts Loose!" perfectly captures the unbridled energy on display. With Roger Stern writing and Lyle handling both pencils and inks on the interior, this is a fine snapshot of DC's late-'80s superhero storytelling at its most visceral.
