“Baptism of Fire!”

This Winter 1988 DC issue throws Starman headlong into a clash with the Power Elite, as the cover — penciled and inked by Tom Lyle — captures a kinetic multi-figure brawl packed with punching fists, crackling energy, and costumed combatants pressing the attack from every angle. A large blue-tinted figure dominates the right side while a red-haired hero in a yellow-and-magenta costume unleashes a glowing strike at center, flanked by two more orange-clad fighters bursting through a green-tinged impact. With Roger Stern scripting and Tom Lyle on interior art as well, "Baptism of Fire!" looks like exactly the kind of action-charged team throwdown that made late-'80s DC so much fun.
