The New Mutants #98 (1991) Rob Liefeld was born on October 3, 1967, and over the course of a career spanning more than three decades, he became one of the most recognizable — and polarizing — figures in American comics. He broke through at Marvel in the late 1980s and early 1990s, building a devoted following through his kinetic, muscle-heavy work on The New Mutants and then X-Force. During that run he co-created two characters who would go on to far outlast his Marvel tenure: the time-traveling soldier Cable, developed alongside writer Louise Simonson, and the wisecracking mercenary Deadpool, created with writer Fabian Nicieza.
In 1992, Liefeld was among a group of prominent Marvel artists who departed the publisher to establish Image Comics, a venture built on the principle of creator ownership. The very first Image release was his own Youngblood #1, a title that remained central to his output alongside Supreme, Brigade, Avengelyne, and Team Youngblood. Across nearly five hundred credited issues as artist, writer, inker, and colorist, his style — characterized by exaggerated anatomy and aggressive action staging — proved enormously influential on the aesthetic of 1990s mainstream comics, even as it drew persistent critical debate. His business practices and public statements have generated further controversy throughout his career, ensuring that discussions of his legacy rarely lack friction.
