About this Issue

Prelude to Deadpool Corps #1 marks the first team appearance of the Deadpool Corps, Marvel's audacious multiverse-spanning ensemble built entirely from alternate-reality Deadpool variants. The concept — that Wade Wilson's uniquely fractured mind makes him the only being immune to a consciousness-devouring cosmic entity — pushed the Merc with a Mouth squarely into cosmic-adventure territory while leaning hard into the franchise's signature self-aware absurdism. By assembling Lady Deadpool, Kidpool, Dogpool, and Headpool under one banner for the first time, the issue established a template for Deadpool multiverse storytelling that Marvel's film division would eventually adapt in Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), bringing several of these variants to a mainstream global audience.

History

The five-issue prelude miniseries was written by Victor Gischler and drawn in its first issue by Rob Liefeld — the artist who co-created Deadpool himself — giving the launch an in-universe sense of homecoming for the character's visual identity. Editor Axel Alonso oversaw the project, which Marvel positioned as a universe-spanning event timed to roll out across March 2010. The series fed directly into the subsequent 12-issue Deadpool Corps ongoing, with Gischler and Liefeld continuing as the creative backbone of that follow-up run.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First team appearance of the Deadpool Corps — the multiverse ensemble of Deadpool variants — occurs in this issue.
  • Written by Victor Gischler; penciled by Rob Liefeld (Deadpool's co-creator on art); cover by Dave Johnson; edited by Axel Alonso.
  • Features Wanda Wilson (Lady Deadpool, Earth-3010) joining the Corps alongside Earth-616's Wade Wilson, in her second overall comics appearance — her first appearance was in Deadpool: Merc with a Mouth #7.
  • The Corps roster introduced across the Prelude series also includes Headpool (the zombified Deadpool head from Earth-2149), Kidpool (Earth-10330), and Dogpool (Earth-103173).
  • The narrative framing for assembling the Corps: Wade Wilson is chosen because his fractured mind makes him uniquely immune to the Awareness, a cosmic entity threatening to devour the free will of the entire Multiverse.
  • An Ed McGuinness variant cover was produced as a 1-for-30 retailer incentive.
  • The issue is part of a five-issue miniseries that fed directly into the Deadpool Corps ongoing series (2010–2011, 12 issues), also written by Gischler and drawn by Liefeld.
  • Reprinted in Deadpool Classic Vol. 12: Deadpool Corps (2015), which collects Prelude to Deadpool Corps #1–5, Deadpool Corps #1–12, and Deadpool Family #1.
