About this Issue

X-Force #6 (cover-dated January 1992) is the issue where the revamped Brotherhood of Evil Mutants—now led by Toad and including Blob, Pyro, Sauron, and the newly introduced Phantazia—made their first full interior appearance, pivoting the title from solo-villain skirmishes toward a faction-war format that would define early 1990s X-Men storytelling. Alongside the Brotherhood's debut in the story proper, the issue simultaneously introduces Thornn, a feline-powered Morlock whose personal vendetta against her sister Feral gives the conflict a familial dimension absent from most superhero team books of the era. The issue also advances the long-running Copycat deception: the 'Domino' present with Cable and X-Force throughout this run is in fact the shapeshifter Vanessa Carlysle, a narrative time-bomb that would not fully detonate until issue #11, making every Cable–Domino scene in this arc retroactively loaded with dramatic irony. Taken together, those character introductions and unresolved mysteries made #6 a dense table-setting chapter for the most consequential stretch of the series' Liefeld–Nicieza collaboration.

History

The issue was written by Fabian Nicieza and plotted and pencilled by Rob Liefeld, with colors by Steve Buccellato and editorial oversight from Suzanne Gaffney and Bob Harras. It was released on November 26, 1991, bearing a January 1992 cover date, placing it squarely inside the brief window before Liefeld's departure from Marvel—he illustrated the series through issue #9 and stopped plotting after #11, ultimately leaving in 1992 to co-found Image Comics. Nicieza, who scripted dialogue and shaped character interiority throughout this period, is credited as the primary creative engine behind the team dynamics and the Thornn–Feral sibling subplot that emerged in this issue; the issue also includes a 'Cable Guide' bonus feature, a text-and-image supplement providing in-universe dossiers on team members, suggesting the editorial team was actively working to build reader orientation around a roster that had launched only five issues earlier.

Trivia · 8 facts

  • First interior appearance of Phantazia (Eileen Harsaw), a wave-field-manipulating mutant and member of Toad's Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, who had appeared only on the cover of the previous issue (#5).
  • First appearance of Thornn, a feline-powered Morlock who is revealed to be the sister of X-Force member Feral; Thornn's stated condition for any Morlock–Brotherhood alliance is that she be allowed to personally settle accounts with Feral.
  • First full interior appearance of Toad's incarnation of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants (Toad, Blob, Pyro, Sauron, and Phantazia), who attempt to forge an alliance with Masque's Morlocks before attacking X-Force's Adirondack Mountain base independently.
  • The 'Domino' appearing alongside Cable throughout this issue is actually Vanessa Carlysle (Copycat), who was impersonating Domino from as early as New Mutants #98; the real Domino does not appear as herself until X-Force #8.
  • Written by Fabian Nicieza and pencilled by Rob Liefeld, with colors by Steve Buccellato and editing by Suzanne Gaffney and Bob Harras; released November 26, 1991 with a January 1992 cover date.
  • The issue includes a supplemental 'Cable Guide' bonus feature providing in-universe dossiers on team members, part of the creative team's ongoing effort to contextualize the young series' roster for new readers.
  • Story title is 'Under the Gun,' part of a multi-issue arc of the same name that spans issues #5–7 and #9.
  • The issue has been collected in: X-Force: Under the Gun TPB (Marvel, 2011), X-Force Omnibus Vol. 1 (Marvel, 2013, and a revised 2024 edition), and X-Force Epic Collection Vol. 1: Under the Gun (Marvel, 2017).
