Joe Chiodo

Born on January 22, 1958, Joe Chiodo is an American artist and colorist whose four-decade career in comics stretches from 1981 through at least 2023. He built his reputation primarily through work in the superhero and action genres, contributing across a remarkably broad range of roles — penciling, inking, lettering, coloring, and writing — across nearly 300 issues.

Chiodo became particularly associated with the Image Comics universe during its 1990s heyday, with his most frequent credits appearing on titles such as Gen 13, Cyberforce, WildC.A.T.S, and Wetworks, all published under the Wildstorm imprint. He also contributed to mainstream Marvel work, including Iron Man, demonstrating range beyond any single publisher or house style. His coloring work earned him two nominations for the Comics Buyer's Guide Favorite Colorist Award — one in 1997, when he was recognized alongside colleague Jessica Ruffner as part of the Wildstorm FX coloring studio, and a second individual nomination in 1998. Those nominations reflect how central his color sensibility was to the vivid, high-energy aesthetic that defined Wildstorm's output during that period. Over the course of his career, Chiodo proved himself a versatile craftsman capable of shaping books both visually and narratively across an impressive span of titles and genres.
