Bob Fujitani
1921–2020
Robert Fujitani was born on October 15, 1921, and spent nearly a century as one of American comics' most versatile contributors before passing away on September 6, 2020. His career stretched across an extraordinary eight decades, with credits as artist, colorist, inker, and writer appearing on 187 issues between 1942 and 2022.
Fujitani came of age during the Golden Age of comics and built a reputation for reliable, skilled draftsmanship across remarkably varied genres. His body of work ranged from the crime comics boom of the late 1940s and early 1950s — including sustained runs on *Crime Does Not Pay* and *Crime and Punishment* — to beloved licensed properties such as *Lassie* and the Dell anthology series *Four Color*. He also contributed to the science-fiction superhero title *Doctor Solar, Man of the Atom*, demonstrating a flexibility that kept him active across changing tastes and publishing eras. His work additionally appeared in the German market through *Fernseh Abenteuer*, reflecting a broader international reach than many of his contemporaries enjoyed.
What distinguished Fujitani over the long arc of his career was not a single landmark creation but a consistent professionalism across genres and publishers. He lived to see comics scholarship reclaim serious interest in the Golden and Silver Age work he helped produce, leaving behind a catalog that rewards closer attention from historians of the medium.
