☆ Be the first to review + Add to your collection — Join freeThis issue contains two true crime stories. "Obey the Law" follows a man named Johnny O'Banion, a gangster whose girlfriend Lucy Turino becomes entangled in his criminal activities in Chicago; after O'Banion is killed, Lucy eventually abandons the life of crime. "Beano Breen: The South Side Strong Boy" recounts how the notorious Kerry Village tough, Beano Breen, was so formidable that his rivals imported a muscle-man to challenge him, though Breen proved unstoppable. "Hutch Ryerson and the Body in the Box" tells of con-man Hutch Ryerson, who purchased a coffin without examining its contents and became implicated in a murder when the coffin was found to contain a corpse.
From the rough streets of 1920s Chicago, Dion "Gimpy" O'Banion rises from a young loafer to become the ruthless head of a criminal enterprise—a mobster with an oddly artistic sensibility who pairs his deadly ambitions with an unlikely flower shop front. As O'Banion consolidates power over his gang and flexes his criminal reach through extortion, robbery, and murder, law enforcement closes in, determined to stop a killer whose luck and intimidation tactics have kept him one step ahead of justice. Watch as this swashbuckling, ambidextrous gangster discovers that even the cleverest schemes and the most artfully arranged cover-ups cannot shield him forever from the consequences of his crimes.
When a mysterious corpse turns up at a Chicago auction in 1948, Detective Lawlor finds himself investigating a puzzle with no clear answers—but the cunning Hutch Ryerson, who left the body hidden in that very cellar months earlier, is confident his perfect crime will go unsolved. As suspicion falls on everyone but the real killer, Ryerson watches from the shadows, secure in the knowledge that no one knows about his dark past or the trail of victims he's left behind across Montana and beyond.
