Thelma, on trial for her life, thinks back to 1945 when she arrived in Chicago, a war widow, and got a job as a waitress in a fancy restaurant. She makes mistakes and is fired while waiting on wealthy customer Phillip. Phillip befriends her and they marry and have a son. However, her husband Steve returns, insane and with a disfigured face from his war injuries. He blackmails Thelma; she writes a letter of confession to Phillip and meets Steve, who decides he now wants the money and his wife. They struggle and Steve falls to his death. Back in the present, Thelma is found not guilty.
